Shell looks to past for help

By Steve CorkranCONTRA COSTA TIMES

Art Shell spent most of his first two full days as Raiders coach finding replacements for the voids on the coaching staff he inherited from predecessor Norv Turner. He is expected to name former longtime Raiders assistant coach Tom Walsh offensive coordinator as soon as today.

Walsh coached with the Raiders during their entire stay in Los Angeles from 1982-94. He got fired along with Shell after the 1994 season.

The imminent move also sends a strong signal that Shell has autonomy to decide who he wants to fill the vacant positions on his staff. Walsh coached alongside Shell from 1983-89 and under Shell from the time Shell replaced Mike Shanahan as coach four games into the '89 season.

Walsh took over as Shell's offensive coordinator in 1992 after Shell demoted Terry Robiskie following an 0-4 start.

Walsh's expected arrival further solidifies the belief that Oakland's offensive line will be the focus of much attention during the offseason and training camp after a disappointing showing for much of last season.

Walsh handled several duties during his initial stint with the Raiders -- quarterbacks, receivers and offensive coordinator. He is a skilled teacher in things such as blocking protection, especially blitz pick-ups. Those are areas that hurt the Raiders last season.

The Raiders extended the contract of defensive coordinator Rob Ryan last month. Offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye, special teams coach Joe Avezzano, offensive line coach Jim Colletto, defensive line coach Sam Clancy, defensive backs coach Clayton Lopez and special teams assistant Martin Bayless were let go. Colletto, Bayless and Raye landed jobs elsewhere.

Quarterbacks coach John Shoop was viewed as a logical successor to Raye, based on his three years as offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears from 2001-03 and his having been with the Raiders last season.

However, Shell called upon an old friend and someone he knows what to expect from. For now, Shoop remains in his old position. He has drawn interest from the Buffalo Bills about their offensive coordinator vacancy.

Former St. Louis Rams offensive lineman Jackie Slater is the leading candidate to replace Colletto, with former Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Irv Eatman joining him as an assistant.

Walsh also coached at U.S. International University in San Diego and Idaho State (head coach, 1997-98). He was offensive coordinator at Murray State in 1980 and the University of Cincinnati in 1981.

Jackie Slater has his own website teaching offensive line techniques...

Jackie Slater's O-Line Technique Seminar Series

Jackie Slater has put in place services that will help young offensive lineman reach their goals, whether it be securing playing time, acquiring college scholarships, to having the type of quality professional career that you want, Jackie Slater can help you accomplish your goals!

Jackie is prepared to share the wealth of knowledge that he has acquired in twenty-nine consecutive years as a player including two decades as an NFL Hall of Fame player. “I feel that certain players can seize a definite advantage during training camp through these training sessions.”

The services provided include, technical teaching, problem solving, strategic planning, recourse technique, debriefing sessions and ongoing consultation for offensive linemen. “I believe that many offensive linemen are not learning the essential techniques needed to not only survive, but to thrive at the line of scrimmage.”

Playing along the offensive line involves much more than just being big and athletic. In fact, I believe that the quickest way for an offensive lineman to lose his job, and forfeit valuable playing time and future opportunities is to rely solely on his athletic ability.

In light of the reality that there is an atmosphere that lacks proven teaching of certain technical staples, it is no wonder that players are not playing as long as they would like nor are they having the success that their athletic ability warrants. The language of dominance, quality technical performance and longevity must be spoken often and taught with proven conviction.

Jackie wants to see young offensive linemen grow and have the kind of success that they desire. With the multitude of opportunities that exist for offensive linemen, it is very important that these young athletes seek and acquire the skills that will allow them to reach their goals. With playing time, college scholarships, and even professional football careers all within their reach, I encourage young linemen and their parents to start today getting ready for tomorrows challenges.

If you are a player that wants to have a definite mental and technical edge going into training camp and practices, Jackie Slater can get you ready for the unique challenges that lie ahead.

Mission

My mission is to help young offensive linemen grow and achieve desired success. To help the linemen achieve success, I will share a wealth of knowledge acquired during my twenty-nine years of playing football. I will facilitate a seminar where I teach the skills needed to play at any level of football. These skills are considered staples and cornerstones of the game.

They are still friends but this was kind of amusing.... from November 1994...

... Raiders offensive coordinator Tom Walsh could be on the hot seat as a result of the Jeff Hostetler-Art Shell argument. It was Walsh who precipitated the argument by telling Hostetler he could change plays if he wanted. Walsh never told Shell.

Chester and Art....

Midway through his second season with the Raiders, defensive lineman Chester McGlockton stopped by Shell, his coach, as McGlockton trotted off the field after practice.

"Hey," he said to Shell, "someone told me you used to play."
